Materials

  • Cotton Yarn, Weight 4 (in your desired colors)
  • U.S. Size H/5.0 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Leather tag

Note: 100% cotton yarn is strongly recommended for heat safety.

Stitches & Abbreviations

  • CH = Chain
  • SC = Single Crochet
  • SL ST = Slip Stitch
  • ST(S) = Stitch(es)
  • BLO = Back Loop Only
  • FLO = Front Loop Only
  • YO = Yarn Over

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is worked holding two strands of yarn together.
  • The CH 1 at the end of each row does not count as a stitch.
  • The thermal stitch is created by working into two loops at once for a thick, insulated fabric.

Thermal Stitch Explanation

The thermal stitch creates a dense, double-layered texture by inserting your hook into:

  • The back loop of the current row, and
  • The unworked front loop of the previous row

Then complete the stitch as a standard single crochet.

Pattern Instructions

Foundation:
CH 29

Row 1:
SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each CH across.
CH 1, turn.
(28 SC)

Row 2:
BLO SC in each stitch across.
CH 1, turn.
(28 BLO SC)

Row 3:
Insert hook into the BLO of the current row and the unworked FLO from the previous row at the same time.
YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through all loops (completing a SC).
Repeat across.
CH 1, turn.
(28 stitches)

Repeat Row 3 until your piece measures the same height as it does width, forming a square.

Final Row:
Insert hook into the FLO of the current row and the FLO of the previous row.
Complete as a SC across.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Optional Details

Corner Loop

CH 11
SL ST in 2nd CH from hook and across.
Fasten off, leaving long tails.
Attach to one corner to create a hanging loop, then weave in ends.

Leather Tag

Attach a leather tag to one corner for a clean, finished look.
