Modified Moss Stitch Baby Blanket: An Easy Crochet Pattern with Beautiful Texture

Some of my favorite crochet projects use simple stitches to create something that looks much more intricate. My new Modified Moss Stitch Baby Blanket does just that, with a beautifully textured body and a delicate scalloped border.

Whether you’re making a baby shower gift or simply want a relaxing project to work on in the evenings, this beginner-friendly blanket is a lovely choice.

Simple Stitches, Beautiful Results

The body of this blanket alternates slip stitches and half double crochet stitches in an easy one-row repeat. Once you get comfortable with the rhythm, you can settle in and enjoy watching the texture grow.

The scalloped border adds a soft finishing touch using single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and slip stitches.

One tip before you begin: keep your slip stitches relaxed! Working them too tightly can make the following row harder to crochet.

Yarn and Materials

For my sample, I used Baby Bee Sweet Delight in Gingerbread. The warm shade highlights the stitch texture beautifully and makes a lovely addition to a neutral nursery.

You’ll need:

  • Approximately 250 g of light weight/category 3 yarn

  • A 4.5 mm crochet hook

  • A yarn needle

  • Scissors

The finished blanket measures approximately 28 inches wide by 34 inches long. Your finished size and yarn usage may vary depending on your yarn and tension.

The size is easy to customize, too. Start with an even number of foundation chains to adjust the width, then work additional or fewer rows to change the length.

Make It Your Own

Choose a soft neutral for a timeless look, a gentle pastel for a baby gift, or a richer shade that lets the texture stand out. This simple repeat works beautifully as a single-color blanket, letting the stitches do the decorating.
