Special Instructions:

Note 1: I recommend reading through the pattern in its entirety before beginning. Note which rounds you will be changing color. Close the last stitch of the round prior to the color change with the new color. Leave a 6 inch yarn tail for weaving in after color change.

Note 2: While working the rounds of the bag the wrong side of the fabric will be facing you.

Note 3: The rounds of Double Crochets in the tote are also referred to as Granny Rounds. The table is written for the color block style. The other option is to use a single color (i.e. black in the sample photos) for the Granny Rounds.

Note 4: I have provided links below to the exact yarn that I use to make this pattern. Please understand that I have no ability to know if/when a specific yarn may be discontinued or unavailable. Thank you!

Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in colors Ecru, Red, Pink Lemonade, and White or Black and Ecru: JoAnn or Lion Brand

Designer Tips:

  • I recommend using a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. To make finishing easier, weave in yarn ends from color changes as you go along.

After completing Round 31. Weave in all remaining yarn ends.

Strap (Make 2):

Leave a long starting tail of yarn for attaching the strap to the tote.

Foundation Chain & Row 1: CH 6, 1 SC in each ST to end of row, CH 1 to turn. (5 SC made)

Rows 2-91: 1 SC in each ST to end of row, CH 1 turn.

After Row 91, CH 1 and turn the strap. Work 1 SC all the way around the strap, placing 2 SC in each Corner. SL ST to the 1st SC made and fasten off leaving a tail of yarn to attach one end of the strap to the tote.

 Finishing Instructions:

  1. You will attach 1 strap to each side of the tote bag. One end of each strap will be attached to the left side of the tote (as it faces you) and the remaining end will be attached to the right side (see photo below).  Begin by turning the bag right side out. Next, take one strap and place one end just inside the bag below Round 30. Approximately 3 inches from the edge (make sure the strap is also right side facing and not twisted). With the yarn tail left for sewing, secure the end to the bag. Repeat this process with the remaining end of the strap on the right side. Flip the bag over and repeat to attach the second strap, making sure to align the second strap with the first one you have placed for symmetry.

Finished! I hope you enjoy your Market Tote. Thank you for stitching along with me!
