Plush Crochet Hearts & Garland
A soft, beginner-friendly crochet project for gifting and decorating
There’s something special about a handmade heart. Simple, soft, and full of intention, these Plush Crochet Hearts are one of those projects that feel just as good to make as they do to gift.
This pattern was designed to be approachable, relaxing, and versatile. Whether you’re creating a single heart as a small gift, stringing several together into a garland, or turning them into a Valentine’s Day wreath, these hearts add a cozy, handmade touch wherever they’re used.
The instructions below walk you through exactly how to make the hearts, step by step, with helpful notes along the way. A full video tutorial is also included if you prefer to follow along visually. The written pattern and measurements are taken directly from the original pattern PDF which is available for purchase in my shop here: Plush Hearts

SC2TOG (Decrease) Explanation
Insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
Insert hook into the following stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
Alternate Start Option
If you’re not comfortable with a Magic Ring, you may chain 2 and work all stitches for Round 1 into the second chain from the hook.
Heart Pattern
Using a J hook and your desired yarn color
All pieces are worked in continuous rounds.
Top of the Heart (make 2)
Round 1: 6 SC in MR. (6 SC)
Round 2: (1 SC in next ST, 1 INC in next ST) repeat around. (9 SC)
Round 3: 1 SC in each ST around. Fasten off and secure tails. (9 SC)
Joining the Top Pieces
Round 4:
Using a short strand of the same yarn, align the two top pieces and tie them together at stitch 4 on both pieces.
Once secure, rejoin working yarn at the first stitch of either top piece.
Single crochet evenly around both pieces. (18 SC)
Designer Note:
If you rejoin with a chain 1, it does not count as a stitch. Be sure to continue working clockwise so the right side of your stitches stays facing out.
Shaping the Heart
Round 5: (1 SC in next 4 STS, 1 SC2TOG) repeat around. (15 SC)
Round 6: (1 SC in next 3 STS, 1 SC2TOG) repeat around. (12 SC)
Round 7: (1 SC in next 2 STS, 1 SC2TOG) repeat around. (9 SC)
→ Stuff heart firmly with fiberfill
Round 8: (1 SC in next ST, 1 SC2TOG) repeat around. (6 SC)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Closing the Heart
Using the yarn tail, weave through the front loops only of each stitch from Round 8.
Gently pull to cinch the opening closed. Pass the needle through the heart to secure, then trim excess yarn.
Tip:
The end of your crochet hook or a small craft rod works well to push stuffing into the top curves of the heart for clean shaping.
Optional Bow Detail
Cut a short length of cotton yarn in a complementary color.
Thread a yarn needle and insert it under one stitch where you’d like the bow to sit. Pull through and remove the needle.
Tie a small knot to anchor the yarn, shape into a bow, and trim the ends.
If desired, secure with a small dab of fabric glue.
Heart Garland Instructions
Crochet as many hearts as needed for your desired length.
Cut a piece of twine or string to size, leaving about 6 inches on each end for hanging.
Thread a yarn needle and pass it through the center of each heart, spacing them evenly.
For extra detail, tie small fabric strips or ribbon between hearts—or keep it simple for a clean, minimal look.
Heart Wreath Instructions
Choose a wreath base you love, such as a grapevine or eucalyptus wreath.
Using floral wire, thread a short piece through a stitch at the back center of each heart.
Secure the heart to the wreath by gently twisting the wire around the base.
Continue adding hearts until you’re happy with the layout. Finish with ribbon, baby’s breath, or small florals for a soft, romantic feel.
